WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stephen Peat, a former enforcer for the Washington Capitals who later served as an executive with the NHL Alumni Association, died Saturday in a motorcycle crash in Virginia.

He was 64.

Peat played 10 seasons in the NHL, including six with the Capitals, from 1985 to 1991. He was known for his physical play and was one of the most feared enforcers in the league during his era.

Peat retired from the NHL in 1994 and joined the NHL Alumni Association, where he served as vice president for 10 years.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Stephen Peat,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement released Sunday.

“Stephen was a true warrior on the ice and a dedicated member of the NHL Alumni Association. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the entire hockey community.”

Peat is survived by his wife, two children, and two grandchildren.
